PremierMRO’s General Manager – David Scocos

Beyond the Wrench: Fostering the Next Generation of Aviation Technicians at Premier’s Dayton MRO

Recently, the hangars at PremierMRO facility in Dayton were filled with more than just the sound of turbines—they were filled with the future of aviation.

Students from a local career center stepped inside the world of Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO), getting a firsthand look at what a career in aviation maintenance really looks like. Leading the tour was General Manager David Scocos, who spent the day walking them through the hangar, answering questions, and breaking down the realities of the industry.

Whenever PremierMRO hosts students, it is more than a tour. It is a hands-on look at how the next generation of technicians is coached and developed every day beyond traditional training.

Inspiring the Next Generation

As David guided students through the facility, his message centered around hands-on and direct leadership rooted in mentorship.

His own path in aviation was sparked as a high school student when he watched a UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter land during an Army Aviation recruiting event. What stood out wasn’t just the aircraft. It was the crew.

They took the time to answer his questions and encourage him. The experience set him on the path that he walks today at PremierMRO. Leading with a focus on creating opportunities, offering guidance, and making sure the next generation has access to the same kind of mentorship that launched his career.

Built From Every Angle of Aviation

As General Manager, David brings a broad range of experience shaped by years in military aviation, maintenance, manufacturing, business development, and flight operations.

He oversees the planning, direction, and coordination of operations, while focusing heavily on developing a highly skilled, motivated team.

PremierMRO’s Culture of Continuous Growth

While demand for A&P (Airframe and Powerplant) mechanics continues to rise, David spoke candidly about a common issue in aviation maintenance, what he refers to as “wrench-turning factories.” Shops where new technicians are placed in a corner, assigned repetitive tasks, and given little opportunity to grow.

At PremierMRO, the approach is different.

Technicians are developed from the ground up, with exposure to all aspects of the aircraft from landing gear and engines to advanced avionics installations and handcrafted interior work. The goal goes beyond basic training of mechanics and is more focused on building well-rounded technicians who understand the aircraft as a complete system.

More Than Mechanics: The Art of Aviation

The tour extended beyond general maintenance into PremierMRO’s interior refurbishment capabilities, highlighting a side of aviation many students had never seen.

From hand-stitched Italian leather interiors to full cockpit modernizations, the work blends technical precision with artistry.

Projects like transforming a 1957 Cherokee with a full glass cockpit or designing custom cabin interiors demonstrate that aspects of aviation maintenance involve creativity as well as specialized and highly marketable skills that make technicians indispensable.

Building Something Bigger

For David, the role at Premier is about more than operations. It’s about building something that lasts.

The opportunity to shape the culture, develop people, and grow a facility from the ground up is what drew him to the company. With Dayton’s strategic location and PremierMRO’s vision for expansion, the goal is clear:

To build one of the region’s leading MRO facilities and one of the most desirable places to work in aviation.

The Takeaway

David and the PremierMRO team are committed to fostering the next generation of aviation technicians. New technicians are integrated into teams, trained across major systems, and mentored toward advanced troubleshooting—the highest level of the craft.

Joining PremierMRO means becoming part of a team that values craftsmanship, mentorship, and growth. It’s an environment where careers are built intentionally, and where the next generation has a real path forward.

At PremierMRO, it is the people who make all the difference backed by leaders who take the time to show them how.
